Why Belize businesses need a more structured marketing strategy
Most Belize businesses market in bursts: a post, a logo, a promotion. Here is what a structured strategy is and how to start one.
By Tide & Co.
Look closely at the marketing of almost any Belize business and the same pattern appears. A logo from one designer. A Facebook page updated when someone has a spare hour. A website built a few years ago. A promotion that starts a month before the busy season and stops when it ends. Each piece may be fine on its own. Together they do not add up to a system.
What “unstructured” looks like
- The goal is “more visibility”, not a number or a decision someone can check.
- Each channel says something slightly different about the business.
- Work is bought as separate jobs, so nothing builds on the last piece.
- Nobody reviews what happened, so the next round repeats the last one.
- Marketing speeds up before the busy season and goes quiet after it.
Why it matters more in a small market
Belize is small, and reputation travels quickly. The people who might choose you are also very different from one another: residents, long-term expats, visitors planning a trip, and buyers or partners overseas who may never have been here. Many businesses speak to English and Spanish speakers at the same time. When the message is inconsistent, the cost is higher, because the same person is likely to meet you in several places before they get in touch.
Small teams add another pressure. The owner is often the marketing department, the photographer and the person who replies to messages. Without a plan, marketing is whatever fits between everything else.
What structure actually means
A structured strategy is not a long document. It is clear answers to five questions:
- Who exactly are you trying to reach?
- What do they need to believe before they enquire or book?
- Where do they meet you: search, social media, WhatsApp, a referral, a listing site?
- What will you make, and how often?
- How will you know it is working?
Write the answers on one page. That page is the strategy. Everything else is execution of it.
Start small, but start in order
The order matters more than the size. First, positioning: what you are for and who you are for. Second, the foundation: a website that explains the business, a profile people can find, photography that shows the real place. Third, a rhythm: a monthly plan for what gets made and published. Fourth, a review: what happened, and what changes next month. Skipping to the third step without the first two is how businesses end up posting regularly without anyone knowing why.
A practical first month
- Week one: write down the goal for the next six months in plain words, and the one kind of customer you most want.
- Week two: look at what you already have, honestly. Which pieces still describe the business accurately?
- Week three: choose two channels you can keep up and drop the rest for now.
- Week four: set a calendar for the next ninety days and pick one number to watch, such as enquiries, bookings or calls.
This is the logic behind how we work at Tide & Co. A marketing partnership plans, creates, runs and improves the whole system, month after month. If you would rather start with one piece, tell us what you are working on and we will say honestly where it fits.
